Adding Hyperlinks to Cells

Adding hyperlinks is a little different in Excel then it was in Word. It is also more useful since you can link to other sheets within your document and different excel documents as well as other types of documents and websites.

A hyperlink is text or an image you can click on to get to another place in a document, a different document, a website, ... It is most commonly used on the Internet to get from page to page or site to site. The blue underlined text you click on to move from page to page are called hyperlinks.

A hyperlink does not have to be blue in colour or underlined but it was the original standard set so users could recognize hyperlinks.

Reasons to add hyperlinks in Excel documents:

  • To link to websites for more information or sourcing
  • To bring up additional information from another file (ie. Images, other spreadsheets, Powerpoint presentations)
  • To link to different sections in the document (table of contents)

Hyperlinks are great for linking to charts that represent data and different spreadsheets that are related. Enough information! Time for a little hands-on (if you know what I mean).
