Cut, Copy and Paste

This is one of the most important skills you will learn. It can be used in almost any program, between programs and proves extremely useful in managing files and editing documents.

Reasons to use cut, copy & paste:

  • To transfer pictures from a digital camera to your computer
  • To organize pictures and folders
  • To put mp3 files (songs) on an mp3 player
  • To put pictures or mp3s on a CD
  • To go to a website without having to type the address
  • To copy text already typed to another program or location
  • Etc...
This list goes on almost infinitely so make sure you get this one down.

For your benefit, I will go through many of the scenarios above.

  1. Plug the USB cable from the camera into the computer or put the camera memory card directly into the computer (if your computer is compatible).
  2. When the window pops up, click view files. (If the window doesn't pop up, open my computer and continue)
  3. Find the folder with the pictures in it by navigating the folders.
  4. Click on the folder with the pictures in it that you would like to put on your computer.
  5. Click on the word "Edit" on the menu.
  6. Now you have a decision to make. Would you like to leave the pictures on the camera or would you like to keep them and just copy the pictures to the computer.
  7. To leave the pictures on the camera, click "Copy" in the Edit menu. To move them off the camera onto the computer, click "Cut".
  8. Now we have to decide where to put them. I suggest you make a new folder called "Pictures" on the computer hard drive.
